Mercedes Opens Orders for ‘CLA Shooting Brake’ Electric Estate
Mercedes-Benz has commenced customer orders for the ‘CLA Shooting Brake’, marking the automaker’s entry into the electric estate segment. This model, built on the MMA platform shared with the ‘CLA’ saloon, promises up to 753 kilometers of WLTP range in its top configuration. Deliveries begin in the second half of 2025, positioning it against rivals like the BMW ‘i5 Touring’ and Audi ‘A6 e-tron Avant’.
The ‘CLA Shooting Brake’ utilizes an 800-volt architecture for DC fast charging at up to 320 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 20 minutes. Battery options include a 58 kWh pack for entry-level rear-wheel-drive variants and a 97 kWh unit for the long-range model, both paired with an 11 kW onboard AC charger. Rear-axle electric motor outputs range from 200 kW in the base ‘CLA 250+’ to 230 kW in the ‘CLA 350 4MATIC’, with torque figures at 517 Nm and 552 Nm respectively.
Under the hood, the vehicles employ axial-flux motors co-developed with YASA, integrated into the transmission for enhanced efficiency. The chassis features steel-aluminum hybrid construction with selective reinforcement at critical points, contributing to a curb weight of around 2,085 kilograms for the heavier variant. Aerodynamic optimizations, including active grille shutters and a drag coefficient of 0.24, support the extended range claims.
Inside, the cabin mirrors the ‘CLA’ saloon with hyperscreen dashboard options, comprising three OLED displays totaling 141 centimeters diagonally. MBUX infotainment runs on a 45.7 cm central unit with 24 gigabytes of RAM, supporting over-the-air updates for features like route-based preconditioning. Rear passengers access a dedicated 17.3 cm screen, while ambient lighting spans 272 LEDs across 64 colors.
Safety systems include the latest iteration of Driving Assistance Package, with transparent hood view via front camera and automated lane change at speeds up to 210 km/h. Optional rear-axle steering reduces the turning circle to 10.4 meters, aiding urban maneuverability. Production occurs at Mercedes’ Rastatt facility in Germany, with initial allocations focused on Europe and North America.
Pricing starts at €55,000 in Germany for the ‘CLA 250+’ model, escalating to €65,000 for the long-range ‘CLA 350 4MATIC’. This launch expands Mercedes’ electric lineup to 18 models by 2025, aligning with the brand’s target of 50% electric sales by 2030. Fleet operators benefit from a projected total cost of ownership 20% below comparable internal combustion estates over five years. The ‘CLA Shooting Brake’ thus bridges practicality and performance in the compact executive class.
