Mercedes-Benz Reveals 2027 GLB with Electric and Hybrid Powertrains

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the second-generation ‘GLB’ compact SUV, introducing electric variants that replace the prior ‘EQB’ model while preserving the boxy silhouette and optional third-row seating. The redesign extends the wheelbase by 2.4 inches to 108.4 inches overall, enhancing interior space for up to seven passengers without altering the vehicle’s 181.3-inch length. Built on the MMA platform shared with the ‘CLA’ sedan, the ‘GLB’ prioritizes electrification at launch, with two battery-electric options debuting before a mild-hybrid gasoline model follows.

The entry-level ‘GLB250+’ employs a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 268 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds with rear-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive ‘GLB350 4Matic’ pairs two motors for 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet, accelerating to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and offering an EPA-estimated range of 392 miles from its 85-kWh battery pack. Both electric models support 170 kW DC fast charging, replenishing 10 to 80 percent in 32 minutes, and include bidirectional charging for vehicle-to-home power export up to 11 kW.

Interior upgrades feature the MBUX Superscreen system, comprising a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 14.6-inch central touchscreen, and 11.9-inch passenger display, all powered by fourth-generation MBUX software with AI-driven voice controls. The cabin accommodates five passengers standard, with the third row folding flat into the 20.0-cubic-foot cargo area that expands to 62.0 cubic feet. Advanced driver aids encompass the latest Drive Pilot Level 3 system for hands-free highway driving at speeds up to 60 mph in select states.

A mild-hybrid gasoline variant arrives subsequently, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four with a 27-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 1.3-kWh battery. This setup delivers 188 total horsepower, enabling short electric-only operation up to 60 mph for urban efficiency exceeding 50 mpg combined. Front-wheel drive pairs with the hybrid powertrain, while all-wheel drive options extend to electric models via Mercedes’ 4Matic system.

Production begins in early 2026 at Mercedes’ Rastatt, Germany, facility, with U.S. arrivals slated for late 2026 at starting prices around $50,000 for electric trims. The platform supports over-the-air updates for ongoing enhancements, including augmented-reality navigation and expanded autonomy features. Safety systems integrate 10 cameras, five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors feeding a central supercomputer capable of 2,000 teraflops. Mercedes positions the ‘GLB’ as a versatile family hauler bridging compact efficiency and premium utility in a segment dominated by crossovers.
