Toyota Selects Young Drivers for WRC Challenge Program

Toyota GAZOO Racing announced the fifth generation of drivers for its WRC Challenge Program aimed at developing Japanese talent for the World Rally Championship. Daiya Minowa and Zeal Jones emerged as the two selected participants following rigorous final evaluations held in Finland from December 5 to 11. The program provides structured training and competition experience starting in 2026.

Chief instructor Mikko Hirvonen described the candidate pool as highly competitive. He noted Jones demonstrated improved consistency compared to his previous attempt while Minowa showcased exceptional handling skills across various drivetrains despite his youth. Both drivers handled pressure effectively during the selection process.

Minowa expressed gratitude to supporters and family while emphasizing his commitment to learning from coaches. Jones viewed the opportunity as a critical step toward his ultimate goal of becoming WRC champion. He highlighted his focus on clean and smooth driving this year.

The TGR WRC Challenge Program targets cultivation of drivers capable of competing at the highest level of rally racing. Participants receive guidance from experienced instructors including former champions. Toyota invests in grassroots development to strengthen its presence in global motorsport.

Evaluations involved multiple stages testing adaptability in different vehicles and conditions. Candidates faced real-world rally scenarios to assess technical proficiency and mental resilience. The process underscores Toyota’s long-term strategy in driver pipeline construction.

This initiative aligns with Toyota GAZOO Racing’s broader efforts in motorsport talent nurturing. Previous generations have progressed through regional and international rallies. The program bridges aspiring drivers to potential factory seats in the manufacturer’s WRC team.

Selected drivers will begin activities in 2026 with a schedule incorporating European rally events. Training emphasizes stage management, pace notes, and vehicle setup optimization. Toyota provides full technical and logistical support throughout their development.

The announcement reinforces Toyota’s dedication to Japanese rally heritage while incorporating international talent like Jones. Program graduates contribute to the manufacturer’s competitive edge in the evolving WRC landscape dominated by hybrid Rally1 cars.
