Mercedes Announces Updated S-Class: “This Is Not a Facelift, This Is Half a New Car”

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius has made a bold claim regarding the upcoming update to the brand’s flagship sedan. He stated that the refreshing of the current generation is far more extensive than a standard mid-cycle update. The executive described the changes as being so significant that the vehicle is essentially half a new car. This announcement comes just ahead of the official world premiere scheduled for the end of January.

The German automaker has invested heavily in this project to ensure the S-Class remains at the pinnacle of the luxury segment. Källenius revealed that the company spent significantly more on this model update than is typical for a facelift. This decision reflects a strategic pivot in response to the global automotive market’s slower-than-expected transition to fully electric vehicles. Mercedes is extending the life of its combustion engine platforms to meet continued customer demand for high-end internal combustion and hybrid models.

Technologically, the updated S-Class introduces massive changes beneath the surface. Engineers have replaced or modified approximately 2,700 components throughout the vehicle. These updates cover everything from the powertrain to the chassis systems and digital infrastructure. A major highlight is the integration of the latest MB.OS operating system which promises to revolutionize the user experience and interface. The manufacturer aims to set new standards for computing power and software integration in the luxury class.

The visual changes are designed to be subtle yet impactful to distinguish the new model from its predecessor. The front end receives a larger and more imposing radiator grille that features integrated illumination. New headlamps now incorporate a star-shaped light signature that aligns with other recent models in the lineup. The rear also sees updates to the taillight design to complete the exterior modernization. These aesthetic tweaks are meant to reinforce the car’s presence without losing its classic elegance.

Under the hood, the mechanical upgrades are just as extensive as the digital ones. The updated model will feature a revised V8 engine that has been optimized for better performance and efficiency.
