Nokian Introduces Ultimate Winter Tire That Automatically Extends Studs When It Gets Cold Without Any Electronics
Nokian Tyres has unveiled an innovative winter tire that changes how drivers handle icy conditions. The Hakkapeliitta 01 features studs that extend outward on their own when temperatures drop below freezing. This happens through a special adaptive layer in the tread that hardens in the cold and pushes the studs out for superior grip on ice. When the weather warms up above zero, the material softens and retracts the studs back into the tire. Everything relies purely on the physical properties of the rubber compound with no need for sensors, batteries, or driver input.
The Finnish company, known for inventing the first winter tire back in 1934, spent over a decade developing this technology. It addresses the ongoing challenge of studded tires damaging roads in milder climates while still providing top performance where ice is common. Traditional studded tires wear asphalt significantly more because the metal pins stay exposed all the time. This new design keeps the studs hidden on dry or warmer pavement, cutting road wear by around 30 percent compared to standard studded models. It also makes the tire quieter by about one decibel, which makes a noticeable difference in cabin comfort during longer drives.

Performance gains go beyond just road protection. The tire offers roughly 10 percent better grip on ice and a 5 percent improvement in wet conditions over Nokian’s previous flagship studded tire. These enhancements come from the studs deploying exactly when needed, biting into frozen surfaces for better traction in straight lines and corners. The system uses two types of studs placed strategically across the tread to optimize both acceleration and handling in slippery weather. Drivers in regions with unpredictable winters get reliable safety without constant compromises.

Production of the Hakkapeliitta 01 will start at Nokian’s facility in Nokia, Finland. The tire is set to hit the market in fall 2026 with availability in 122 different sizes ranging from 14 to 22 inches. This wide range covers passenger cars, SUVs, and other vehicles that face seasonal snow and ice. While pricing details remain under wraps for now, the focus remains on delivering a practical solution that could expand the use of studded tires in more European countries where strict regulations currently limit them due to infrastructure concerns.
This clever approach blends advanced material science with everyday driving needs. It offers a smart middle ground between maximum safety on frozen roads and minimal impact on pavement during thaws or milder spells. Many drivers in borderline winter zones may find it particularly appealing for its hands-off operation and balanced benefits.
What do you think about this automatic stud system, and would you choose it for your next set of winter tires in the comments?
