The Mercedes A-Class Stays Alive and Returns as a Fully Electric Model by 2029

Recent developments have put to rest earlier speculation that Mercedes might drop the A-Class entirely as the company streamlines its lineup. Instead the iconic compact hatchback will continue with a fresh generation planned for around 2029 and it will arrive as a fully electric vehicle. This shift allows the model to adapt to stricter future emission rules while keeping its place in the brand’s entry-level offerings. The current version introduced back in 2018 has proven popular enough to warrant an extended production run through 2028.

Production of today’s A-Class will move to the KecskemĂ©t plant in Hungary starting next year which frees up the Rastatt factory in Germany for other priorities like the upcoming CLA. This change supports a longer lifecycle for the existing model without major disruptions. The new successor draws from the modular MMA platform first shown in 2023 which brings flexibility for advanced electric technology alongside optional hybrid setups. Mercedes aims to balance innovation cost control and design appeal with this architecture.

Robert Lesnik the company’s Director of Design shared insights in a recent interview highlighting how the upcoming hatchback fits into the broader MMA family. It becomes the fifth member after models like the CLA CLA Shooting Brake GLA and GLB. The focus stays on electric propulsion as the primary choice though a hybrid variant could appear to comply with Euro 7 standards rolling out by 2027. This approach mirrors the setup already planned for the CLA ensuring the A-Class benefits from shared engineering advantages.

Design-wise the new A-Class promises a modern cab-back layout that moves away from the upright boxy look of the original 1990s version. It avoids the extreme aerodynamic shapes found on larger EQ models like the EQE and EQS preferring proportions closer to the CLA with a longer hood and a classic hatchback profile. The result should feel stylish and practical while staying true to the compact premium character fans expect. Mercedes has decided to keep the traditional A-Class name rather than switching to an EQ prefix which simplifies the branding for customers.

The move toward electrification reflects broader industry pressures and Mercedes’ evolving strategy for compact cars. High demand for the current generation helped extend its life and now the brand sees value in evolving the nameplate into an all-electric future. Advanced EV components on the MMA platform promise better efficiency range and performance tailored to urban and everyday driving needs. This keeps the A-Class competitive against rivals while appealing to buyers shifting toward sustainable options.

Overall the plan signals confidence in the model’s enduring appeal even as the automotive world transitions. The combination of proven demand smart platform choices and forward-thinking design positions the A-Class for another successful chapter.
