The 340i replaced the 335i, but displacement didn’t change. It got the carmaker’s first new 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The B58 engine delivered 320 hp, which was 20 more than its predecessor. It had 330 lb-ft of torque which was 30 more.
The 340i still used the TwinPower technology, which included a twin-scroll turbo, Valvetronic variable valve lift, and VANOS variable camshaft timing. This 3-series line came with an eight-speed automatic with a six-speed manual with rev arching.

The carmaker changed the geometry of the chassis for the 340i with new struts in the front, including five bolt-up anchors. BMW gave the new model revamped rear dampers, an electric steering system with a new design, and enhanced stability control.
Although the 240i and 335i look virtually the same to an untrained eye, they are slightly different if you see them from the side. The 340i has new LED daytime running lights moved apart, new taillights, and broader side air intakes.
The previous port Line package became standard on all models except the 320i. It included black B-pillars, black kidney grilles, and high-gloss rear bumpers. The tailpipe also became chrome black with sports seats to add to the package.

The 335i gave BMW a new direction from the misgivings about the 340i. It marked the carmaker’s first mass-production turbo direct injection engine. Some kinks took longer to fix, including the High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP).
Later N55 models showed solid improvement regarding reliability despite the 2335i being prone to some problems, including the cooling system, valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gaskets. BMW took a new direction with the 340i engine
The modular engine shared various parts with the smaller 2.0L engine for the B58. It was just a regular engine with two additional cylinders. The carmaker cut costs while focusing on reliability which was a great strategy. A B58 engine proved more reliable and worked better thanks to being new.

The 340i was released with various efficiency features. A Proactive Driving Assistant used navigation data for fuel saving. Other efficiency features included:

An included Eco Pro Mode accessible through the Proactive Driving Assistant for disconnecting the engine on lifting off the throttle allows the engine to be idle in neutral, saving fuel.
BMW 340i vs. 335i Efficiency
The 340i came with improved connectivity features from those of the 335i. This Series 3 model had smartphone integration, USB ports, and WIFI. Its inbuilt SIM card for passengers to stay connected even without a phone.

Both models sit on the F-30 chassis, although the 340i got a facelift. These cars look familiar to an untrained eye but choosing one over the other is a personal preference. The 340i got better performance and handling from the factory.
